Middlewich

Middlewich is just two miles from junction 18, off the M6. Sandbach and Winsford stations are only 3 miles away and have regular train services to Manchester and Chester. There is also a regular bus service to Crewe, Winsford and Northwich.

Middlewich is set in the heart of Cheshire’s salt area. 200 years ago the Romans called the town Salinae from the Latin word for 'salt works' and much evidence has been found in the district of the invaders long stay. Timber framed housing, pottery and the remains of clay-lined salt evaporation chambers have been excavated.

Middlewich boasts a superb Parish Church in the town centre, whose history dates back to Roman times. It was originally a Saxon Chapel and was replaced by a Norman Church in the 14th century. It sustained some damage during the battle of Middlewich during the Civil war.

Middlewich is a key junction on the bustling waterway; here the Trent & Mersey joins the Shropshire Union Canal. Today these Canals and rivers are still a major feature of the landscape around Middlewich and there are many walks that run alongside them.

The Middlewich Folk and Boat Festival takes place every June, which builds on the towns industrial heritage. It is estimated that 30,000 people visit the town during the festival weekend, along with 400 boats.

In the centre of Middlewich town is the ‘Bull Ring’ an unusual and unique venue where local events are frequently held. There is also an open market held every Tuesday situated on the Southway car park.
