Swettenham lies northwest of Congleton on the north bank of the River Dane.
Early evidence of a settlement here has been brought to light following the discovery of Saxon remains - an old cross found near the site of the ancient Manor House, the other, a small font.
At the time of the Norman conquest the neighbouring township of Kermincham is referred to in the Domesday Book of 1086.
